StarFleet Academy - Episode 5 Review - Sisko and the Amazing world of Gumbo
This week’s episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the one a lot of fans may have not known they needed. And honestly? It delivered with vibes, lore, and emotional chaos…even if it felt a little slower than the past few weeks.
The
episode centers on SAM, a new favorite holographic (photonic, sorry Sam) life
form from Kasq, as she tries to figure out what she’s doing in Starfleet and
whether or not she can actually trust organics. Watching her navigate emotions,
friendships, and social norms is fascinating because not unlike Data, SAM
doesn’t really care if her honesty makes you uncomfortable.
And that? That makes her one of the most endearing characters on the show.
DS9 Fans,
We Won (Kind Of) Let’s talk about Benjamin Sisko. He’s back. But like...is he? Dead?
Alive? Cosmic prophet energy? The episode doesn’t fully answer it, but the
implications are HUGE. On top of that, DS9 fans are going to freak out over
some surprise appearances. This episode felt like a love letter to Deep Space
Nine, and I wanted to cry but I was surrounded by people who are new to this
world.
The whole
thing also gave major TNG Data vibes, especially those moments where Data was
just trying to learn how to be human, like when he tried to learn how to laugh.
SAM’s journey feels like that, but with a fresher take.
SAM +
Caleb = Elite Duo. Every scene with SAM and Caleb is gold. They give Data and
Geordi energy, but Gen Z. For someone who’s learning to trust humans, SAM
clearly trusts Caleb the most, and it’s honestly really sweet. Their dynamic
feels natural and grounded, which is rare in sci-fi shows where everyone is
either overly dramatic or overly stoic.
I was
about to complain that the Caleb and Tarima slow burn was moving at impulse
speed but...suddenly we are ON. Hands on hands off, things are happening and Betazoids
doing what Betazoids do. Caleb is just like the rest of us, one telepathic
touch and it’s over.
Once
again, Nahla Ake and Kelrec team up to impress an important guest at the War
College, and honestly, their dynamic might be one of the best parts of the
show. Kelrec truly seems trapped in his own personal hell, and I love that for
him. Their friendship (even though neither would ever admit it) is fascinating,
and I’m obsessed with how their power dynamic is slowly shifting.
We FINALLY
get to see what nightlife is like off campus, and future San Francisco looks...well
like now honestly. Also, do the War College people have to ruin literally
everything? Yes. Yes, they do. And don’t even get me started on their outfits.
And SAM in
the bar? Relatable. I’ve been in that exact state and have absolutely been
asked to leave a bar. Respect to her for surviving the night.
There were
also so many random moments that completely took me out. Watching them eat
gumbo genuinely made me pause the show and eat something, and Stephen Colbert
is clearly having way too much fun with his job, “Morning Wood”? Sir. The
Doctor’s reference to Tom Paris and Harry Kim with “Let me guess, I should
see the other guy” absolutely sent me, and while “Some of the best
footsteps lead to bars” is probably not going to be one of Star Trek’s
legendary lines, I mean I’ll still put it on a poster and call it inspirational.
Overall,
this episode was fun, heartfelt, and full of lore, but it felt like a slight
step down from the last few episodes. If this were the 2000s and we had 24
episodes a season, I wouldn’t care. But with modern short seasons, every
episode needs to HIT.
That said,
the discovery at the end? Absolutely massive for DS9 fans and genuinely exciting. It reminded me why I
love this universe so much.
This
wasn’t the strongest episode so far, but it was still a good time. And SAM?
She’s quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the entire show.
Until Next Week....
Live Long & Prosper.
